Unit 35: Task 4: D2

Task 4
D2
All the work you complete needs to be archived, should customers want re-prints or alterations.
Graphic images take up huge amounts of space and you need to find the best methods for saving images in a format that:
  • Is a suitable image quality for the type of purpose
  • Is small in MB size (think about compression techniques)
  • Is the right resolution for the purpose
  • Has a suitable colour depth
You need to write an instruction guide for saving images for the purposes mentioned in P2.
So in conclusion a ‘how to save guide’ for:
  1. Internet graphics
  2. Large format graphics
  3. Leaflet suitable graphics.
MB-Megabyte
MP-Megapixel

How to save:
Internet Graphics:
-JPEG (Used in saving images). It is a photo-type image on the Web and has many compression levels. Joint Photographic Experts Group.  JPEG images for internet graphics as these contain pixels which can be either compressed or enlarged to produce good graphics.JPEG files usually involve reduction of size to the original creating a pixelated image.  It is best to use files such as JPEG to create internet graphics as compared to other file formats such as GIF which is used for logos JPEG images are easier to upload to the internet as an image. PNG would also be a good format to save internet graphics in. PNG (A webs graphic file format which has more feature available than GIF and JPEG). Portable Network Graphics. The example of screen shots below displays the variation between the different types of file formats available to save. It shows the quality of a JPEG image, due to it being a lossy image it had better quality and resolution in comparison to the GIF file which is a non-lossy image which shows pixels and a bad image resolution.

Large Format Graphics:

- PSB saves images in large formats as a save option. This is a format used in photoshop to save images with a larger resolution and compress colours well as a large format. Only available to Adobe software, saves as a large file and takes up a lot of space. This can be viewed in photoshop in the save options: when you click file and save as then adjust the file type to PSB or large format images. PSB files tend to be large documents that are for large image sizes. PSB allows images to be saved at up to 300,000 x 300,000 pixels (a larger format - better resolution), they can also be opened as photoshop images or exported to be viewed as a Tiff formatted image depending on the different software. These help store digital images, they extend the PSD file format to a wider range. PSB stands for Photoshop Big - meaning a large scaled image. A PSB file is larger than the 2GB that a PSD file stores. PSB files also save the image with all corresponding save options within Photoshop available this helps allow it save a bigger file size than PSD.

Leaflet suitable graphics:

Illustrator Jpeg
JPEG images are best used for photographs and complex images e.g. leaflets etc. It uses a compression method which removes colours to reduce the file size so that they can be saved smaller and compressed.  If the file size compressed too much it loses quality within images on the leaflet. When saving the leaflet within illustrator it saves it as a JPEG file so that it can be viewed as an image. Another option available for a leaflet graphic is GIF as a GIF file is always used when saving text, this links with the JPEG format as that is available for images needed to be saved. It is used effectively for logos and graphs  which require limited colour : PNG file format.

Unit 35: Task 2: M2

M2
In addition to demonstrating you must justify the choice of tools, file format, image resolution and colour depth used when creating the images. In other words reason why those specific items were used.

Tools- Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop
File Format- AI, EPS, PSD, JPEG, GIF and PSB
Image resolution- The fineness of the bitmap image created in Photoshop is determined by the number of pixels, the more pixels the better resolution. Number of pixels per inch.
Colour depth-  There are 256 tonal values available for image resolution. This is so they capture the colours intended from photographs etc.

Work with logo: The process
Draw shapes - Circles, Imported space ship image
Unites shapes - Group selective shapes or images together so that they can be altered at the same time.
Direct selection tool - Grouping them together in alignment to adjust, re-size and move the shapes.
Manipulate colours - Change the colours individually or group them together so they have the same colour and effect.
Add symbols - None were used but can be added.
Layer panel - Create various layers in order to apply new ideas and shapes.
Edit symbols -  Manipulate the symbol to the preference of the viewer, alterations so that there is improvement.
Apply effects - Apply any shading or 3D effects to add texture etc.
Add a drop shadow - This was used on lettering and images to make the texture and form appear more 3D.

Work with text: The process
Lock & add layers - Overlapping various different texts to add effect.
Add text + Style text- Insert text in any font, size and colour.
Insert within layers -  Inserting the font within the shapes.

All of the graphics produced have been either created in Photoshop or in Illustrator so that they can be the best they can possibly be for the customers value and preference. By saving these images as either GIF or JPEG it allows the image resolution and colour depth to be better and of great quality. These images/logos have more pixels so that they have a better resolution. Many various tools within the software used has allowed me to create the images required and have all been used for a purpose, either with experimentation to then create quality pieces for the customer and others viewing.

Unit 35: Task 3: P6

Task 3
P6
You are learning how to run a business and you also have to consider any potential legal implications of using and editing graphical images.  It would be a disaster if you were taken to court and sued.  Complete research into this area and write a short report summarising you findings.

Legal implications of using and editing graphical images:

'In adhering to the spirit of regulation, the ultimate aim is to protect the clients whose assets fall within the ring-fence and prevent the ring-fenced relying in government support.' Nathan Willmott.

By the laws of copyright; you are unauthorised to use any image without the copyright holders permission (this is the original owner who had created the image to begin with) , unless the image has been modified with a licence (this involves getting approval from the owner). Even if the image has been manipulated in anyway shape or form it still belongs to the owner, so the original licence of the un-edited image then here applies.

In some circumstances you can use the image for print via purchasing them from a stock image sight, this is legal as you are then purchasing the image to then use. Advertising these images without permission is classed as illegal and can result in being taken to court and sued. Plagiarism also shows that this act is completely illegal as you are using someone else's work without their permission (rather like copying for your own benefit which is irresponsible and does not create any personal advantage for the own who is doing this). Some images are copyright free so they are capable of using them legally for personal usage, it is always best to check beforehand for clarification.

In culmination, the legal implications that may cause law suits and other disasters that mainly need to be avoided are copyright issues. My findings show that copyright is the main issue that can be easily avoided by any means necessary. Copyright has been law implicated throughout many countries in the world. Renting copies for the public, broadcasting others copyrighted details can cause serious legal implications as you are using someone else's work and claiming it as your own. There are many other minor potential legal implications which are easy avoided whereas copyright needs to be avoided at all costs as the aftermath is unavoidable.

Unit 35: Task 2: P5

P5
Make the alterations as indicated by the client.
Repost the artwork when the alterations are complete.
www. P4 You have created original graphical images to meet a defined user need.

In order to achieve p5 I would like you to make the following changes.

The band to have effects on the circles making them some type of orb shape reminiscent of a ufo type image. You could add a glow effect.

The nursery you have not included contact details and the flyer could do with being less word. I would also like some photographs in there too.

The van while I like the effect on the van something a little more subtle with more eye catching text is what I require. I would like you to include telephone numbers too.

The Nursery:
I have removed some of the word content and have kept it to the bare minimum so that it feels more like a flyer, the customers preference. I have also included an image of the nursery to show the environment and appearance that the parents would consider of importance. The customer also wanted a contact number so I had then included all contact information i.e. telephone, website and email.

The Band:

I tried to create a glow effect but Publisher does not yet have this plug-in, I compromised and added volume of a different colour to make the appearance of a glow appearing from behind.  Then I altered the image of the circles to make them appear as UFO's like the customer desired.

The Van:
I have made the van more subtle as the customer requested. I have also stuck to plain colours i.e. black which can be altered to the customers preference. I have also made the logo more basic so that it is easier to remember. The colours and fonts etc. can all be changed so that they are more appealing to the audience and customer.

Unit 35: Task 2 :P3+P4

P3 & P4
You now need to create the images mentioned in above. Once they are done you need to upload them to Blogger so the client (Your tutor) can approve them (P4).  Each graphic has to be annotated so you can demonstrate the use of the editing tool you have used (P3) you can print screen this and upload it to Blogger.

Customer #2
As you can see on the vans window there is the businesses name 'Build A Brick' which I have used as a play on words for the other well-known business build a bear. The font is Rockwell condensed, it is in size 30 and is coloured red. These can be altered they are to demonstrate effect against the texture and appeal of the van. As you can see the van has a rather brick like effect to then blend in more with the theme rather than being plain, in my opinion this makes the van seem more eye catching and a worthwhile business that takes the job seriously. Underneath the logo you can see the logo, it is of the well-known ghost from Pacman but has a twist it has a brick effect that stands out even more and fits the theme well. The van consists of two colours Beige and Black; I have chosen these colours as they work well together and contrast well against each other, they stand out and catch the eyes of potential customers. The rest is self explanatory with the lights etc. they key aspects to the van I have mentioned above.  The image at the bottom was an idea I had for the backing of the van as I tried to make it seem like pieces of different types fitting together.
Customer #1

Customer #3

For this customer I have used bold texts to catch attention. There are many friendly images used also in order to fit the audience the flyer is aimed at. It consists of the two central colours blue and orange. I have included at table of times to give further information to the viewer. The contents is friendly and welcoming due to the flyer regarding the care of children The font can be altered but at the moment is at Calibri size 20, colours can also be altered to suit the nursery's appearance and preference. It's simple layout makes it effective and straight to the point there is no 'beating around the bush' as it were its just information of importance.

www. P3 You have demonstrated the use of editing tools to edit and manipulate images.

EBI: You noticed the band ask for a photo too.
A local band would like a logo designed for their website this needs to be combined with their band photo.

Your bank manager would like you to think ahead. If the business is successful, you will need to improve the quality of your output devices.  If cost is not an issue what output mediums could you consider, how could they improve your business and what types of graphic files can they produce?

If the business is successful and I had the capability to improve the quality of out put devices, without cost being an issue the output mediums that I would consider are the following:

Lexmark Genesis S815 - £120
Lexmark genesis s815
Acer Aspire S7-391This Printer is a multifunctional device that uses an image system based on a digital camera. It has many different functions and can print an entire page of A4 paper within 3 seconds. The print quality is exceptional and reliable.  It has other mini-applications that could come in handy for example a calculator, clock, Facebook and Twitter integration, graph or music paper printing and there's even an app to display news and sports feeds from Apple, ESPN and the BBC. By being able to access all these various different mini-applications it will be beneficial due to not having to purchase some of the equipment for example to calculator as it is easily downloadable for the printer. Easy access and great quality printing is what this printer will be providing. This will be extremely useful if I had the opportunity to purchase this, I would then be capable of either printing; photocopying, scan and many many more insuring the productivity of my business and produce good quality documents. A wide format printer would most likely make business better for the long run this is mainly due to the qualities that wide format printers supply to the user. The benefits of a wide format printer help enable a business to print posters or other graphics; you also receive a sharp lined product every time you print, you can also enhance the speed of the printing which will increase productivity.  The down fall for wide-format printers are that they constantly surge when electrical currents pass through so in order to prevent this I would most likely use a surge protected extension lead which also allows more than one device to be plugged in at the same time.

 - Acer Aspire S7-391 £950 - £1,152
This Laptop is created by Acer to be an ideal portable laptop. Its design is to be slim and light which makes to easily portable which has enough power to handle serious work away from the mains. Apart from its battery life which needs improving the Acer Aspire S7-391 is the ideal laptop for the business. Not only is it an internet enabled laptop it can install various software's that will be extremely useful for the design work. By being portable this means that it is not restricted to one area like a computer and can be taken anywhere. This would be deeply appreciated if I were capable of using this laptop within my business. Making graphics would never be the same again, if price was not an issue the graphics that could be produced would be exceptional. By having all these different downloads and access to various things making different graphic formats will be great and be shown on a wide screen of high standard.

 - iMac 27-inch: 3.2GHz £1,699.00
This iMac has been developed by Apple, there are many previous models that have been created and are of great quality but this one would be ideal for design. Not only is it thin and 'an all-in-one piece of art'  it has a wider screen for display. This will come in handy as it allows you to see photos, games, films in a vivid and lifelike version. By having these features it will allow the productivity to be more worthwhile and to be of a better quality. When the utensil is good the product that is produced tends to be even better and in this case due to the iMac being one of the best, the merchandise will also be of a high standard.  Not only this the memory allows you to create and save more data which can come in handy, memory is not only for saving purposes it allows you to install various types of software which will then assist in creating highly regarded products.

 -64GB Memory card £380.00
The Kingston 64GB memory card will be the perfect asset to the graphics produced, they will allow more storage for memory purposes. This will help as we can then develop previous ideas until they are perfect and suitable for the customer, by this I mean I am capable of altering images or other graphical formats repeatedly until they of high praise. This allows me to save more data which will be highly valued and can help avoid any paper work. Online storage can also be accessed so all data is in one collective and safe place. Memory is the key to it all and with excessive amounts memory more software and graphics can be stored within a laptop or computer to increase RAM etc.

-Asus Ge Force GTX Titan 6144MB £900.00
Asus GeForce GTX Titan 6144MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
This graphics card will be best and most valued in my business, it has more gigabytes and makes games and will also allow games to be shown / run more smoothly. It will also be much quieter and will work faster and be cooler so there will be no problem regarding over heating or conking out. Games tend to be more easily played and graphics usually end up not of poor quality and very good visually. Quieter graphics card are usually due to the attached fan that is connected to the graphics card which prevent over heating and then noise which would occur whenever the computer or laptop happened to be turned on. Graphics used and produced will be of the highest quality.

Unit 35: Task 1: M1

M1
Before you purchase the equipment described in P1 you need to consider their limitations.
Add a post describing the drawbacks of all the items named in P1.

Optical drive: There are very few drawbacks of the optical drive: They are reusable but even though this can be beneficial it also prevents you from being able to use that media again, this causes issues as if you re-write a disc the previous data will be completely erased and replaced. The writing time is also an issue as the process takes considerable processing unit resources and may increase the time needed to write and restore the data, the duration of time required to write and restore may cause failure in running other software or may result in the computer crashing as files may overload the hard-drive and could lead to the CPU chip burning out. A limitation for this would the price as if they are to be of high quality it costs quite a lot if you were to buy a wireless optical drive due to it being easily accessible which can make it easier for the business.

Printer: Printers always seem to be lucrative and innovative but they have there down falls. The cost causes hindrance to the user as the cost for high quality ink that is specific to that individual printer can create unprofitable income for businesses and other users as you have to continuously replace the ink in order to produce more honorable products that are valued by the recipient.  Environmental concerns also cause problems as the making of ink can be costly and also cause various pollutants entering the atmosphere. There will be an increase in deforestation so that they can produce printer paper in order to record the information through the printer. A printer can be highly expensive if you require quantity and quality so that it is worth your while but these leads to purchasing branded ink specific for the computer.

Graphics card: Glitches are a main issue caused by graphics cards as there may be an overload of information or they may cause the graphics card to over heat the circuit causing internal damage to the computer. Graphics cards tend to range from £18.00 to £3,000 depending on whether they are HDMI or specific to the brand of computer.

Laptop-Computer-Keyboard-mouse: The draw backs of a laptop are as follows: they tend to be less reliable and an easy target for hackers and for malfunctions. This is due to the fact that antivirus software may not be completely resistant to risks so they can either be wiped clean or brought back to factory settings removing all previous software and documents etc. Whereas a computer can also be easily hacked it has more worries that could be faced as if the fan over the circuit board over heats it can blow the whole circuit board which can lead to replacement but no way of retrieving any of the data previously on it .  The issues with a keyboard and mouse are the range they are limited with if they were wireless they can be used in any location but are required to be connected via USB in the hard drive.
Laptop - Price range between £240.00 to £2,000 depending on type or brand.
Computers- Price range between £200.00 to £1,400 depending on the type or their brand.
Keyboard- Price range between £3.00 to £150.00.
Mouse - Price range between £3.00 to £140.00.

Memory card: The limitations of a memory card is the usage and GB entry, this means that if you insert 6GB worth of memory you are limited to that depending on whether you introduce more or have an external drive for storage and memory. £3.00 to £260.00.

Monitor: Problems with the monitor are mainly due to connection issues meaning that they are connected incorrectly or they cut off whilst you are in the middle of working. This is usually due to cable being frayed or in some cases loose which can send an electrical surge through the monitor to prevent it from functioning correctly. £65.00 to $455.00.

RAM:  There are a few drawbacks connected with RAMS as they allow you to store easily accessible information but has the disadvantage of taking up vasts amounts of space and also the cost is a major disadvantage. The cost is a disadvantage as static RAMS tend to cost more than a computer with a dynamic RAM.  £5.00 to £100.00.

Camera/Webcam: The speed is an issue as digital cameras tend to have a slower shutter speed, in some cases the picture can be lost due to a breakage in the USB cable erasing the image in the process. Camera = £36.00 to £1,900. Webcam= £7.50 to £2,600.

Video/Sound card: Overclocking is a major issue faced with graphics cards is that they often push the stock cooling unit past its limits causing it to overheat, they have cooling issues. Overheating and increased power load can crash your system. £20.00 to £3,000.

CPU Unit:  A drawback to the CPU unit is that if it overheats or is over-run it will then either crash your computer resulting in it no longer working or it can just cause problems with rebooting and displaying saved data. £30.00 to £3,800.

Motherboard: The motherboard is like the CPU unit it is key for the computer to work without this and the CPU no components can be inserted. The drawbacks from this are that they have no flexibility meaning that when upgraded manually they may have empty upgrade slots which will not help upgrade and perform better.  Another problem is due to lots of voltage passing through the circuits it can lead to them burning out and will have to be replaced due to high melting  damage on the circuit. £32.00 to £430.00.

The reason as to why I have mentioned the cost is to show that variation in quality as those that are cheaper are able to do their job but not to the same standard as those that cost more.
